Without further ado, here are the 3 lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine upon U.S History.

The Monroe Doctrine Stated That The Western Hemisphere Was To Remain Outside European Influence

One of the main lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine on U.S history was that European influence was to remain outside of the western hemisphere.

The Monroe Doctrine was delivered by James Monroe in 1823’s State of the Union Address. During this speech Monroe outlined his vision of the future of the western hemisphere calling for the “new world” and “old world” to remain completely separated.

If European powers were to attempt to colonize or influence the western hemisphere this would be seen as an act of aggression towards the United States.

The Monroe Doctrine created a lasting impact that subsequent presidents would use to justify international actions of the United States in the Americas.

One such example would be when Theodore Roosevelt in 1904 used the Monroe Doctrine to justify actions against European powers attempting to influence actions in the Dominican Republic. Today historians know this event as the Roosevelt Corollary.

As such one of the 3 lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine upon U.S history was the establishment that European powers and their influence were to stay away from the Americas.

The Monroe Doctrine Stated That The United States Would Not Interfere With European Policies Or Politics

One of the main lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine on U.S history was that the United States would stay out of European policies and politics.

The Monroe Doctrine was created in the early 19th century. One of the main sections of the document states that the “new world” and “old world” will remain separate. That the United States would not interfere with European policies.

Further, the United States would not interfere with European colonies elsewhere in the world nor enter into conflicts between the 19th century European powers.

This section of the Monroe Doctrine has forever changed U.S history. For the first 150 years of the United States’ history the U.S would only focus upon internal growth and become isolationist outside of a few events.

However, this policy of the Monroe Doctrine would change in World War One with the sinking of the Lusitania which dragged the United States into the European conflict of World War One.

However, this remains one of the main lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine on U.S history.

The Monroe Doctrine Created A Push Towards Unifying The Nations Of The Americas

One of the main lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine upon the history of the U.S was the push towards unifying the nations of the Americas.

There is significant debate on the precedent set by the Monroe Doctrine upon the 19th century independence movements across the Americas. At first the Monroe Doctrine did little to influence European colonial ambitions Britain in 1833 reasserted their control over the Falkland Islands in modern Argentina.

However, by the end of the 19th century the Monroe Doctrine became a valuable tool for the Americas and helped push them towards a unifying movement that today is called the Organization of American States or OAS.

Three years after the Monroe Doctrine was presented by the United States the revolutionary leaders of South America proposed creating a league of American Republics which would help to unify and protect each other from outside influence.

Today this concept of a unified American republic is called Pan Americanism and it was heavily influenced by the Monroe Doctrine of 1823.

Today the headquarters of the Organization of American States is in Washington DC. The main goal of the OAS is to monitor elections to make sure that the nations of the America’s are using fair democratic principles.

As time goes on this creation of a unified Americas becomes one of the main lasting impacts of the Monroe Doctrine upon the history of the United States.
